Alter Markt with Nikolai Church, Old City Hall, replicas of the City Palace and Palais Barberini, Garrison Church, Computer Centre, demolition of GDR architecture such as the University of Applied Sciences from the 1970s. The photographs show the destruction of this outstanding example of GDR modernism by excavators and wrecking ball. Connoisseurs of architectural history see echoes in the building, even a copy of the administration of a US building society built by Mies van der Rohe in Des Moines (Iowa) in 1962. Bare concrete, chipped tiles, rubble, rusty reinforcing iron or pipes bent against each other show the brute force of the demolition, which was decided by Potsdam’s city councillors against numerous protests. These details are juxtaposed with photographs of the entire ensemble of the square, showing the almost scenic layers of different architectural epochs.
