This is the second photo book by photographer, Shinichiro Shiraishi. Since moving to Germany in 2019, he has been trying to trace the source of his own perspective on nature and to reveal the tactile sensation of landscapes created unconsciously. Based on the anonymity and commonality of images he collects from his base in Berlin and places he visits while travelling, and the idea that both artificial and natural objects form nature similarly, he approaches landscape photography through various photographic techniques. This work was shot on ‘an island’ where he stayed for a month in February 2021. He cites the geographer Augustin Berque’s interpretation of landscape theory—which influenced his work—in the photographs and presents the possibility of the landscape as the subject itself can be a subjective ‘portrait’. Imbued with an anonymity that characterises his photography, the distorted photographs that lost their details might have successfully captured the landscape by preserving the immediacy of photography.
