Occupying a privileged economic position, the Global North clings to the idea that there is no viable option other than growth. Yet it is more evident than ever that growth is finite. In many ways, the debates over climate change, rising social inequality, wars, diseases, refugee movements and xenophobia, and, last but not least, the COVID crisis have added urgency to the question of what societies might look like after growth-oriented capitalism. The three-part exhibition Nimmersatt? Imagining Society without Growth in Münster harnesses this momentum to think about alternative ways to proceed and presents works of art to ask: Can we start afresh with a different logic, can we systematically change course and reorganize society, and how? The collaborative project’s focus is on works that propose novel perspectives and figures of thought and initiate a discussion on alternative political and social models.
