The name of Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007) is inseparably linked to his unsurpassed chairs, with which he helped Danish design achieve an international breakthrough. moreEvery design lover has a favourite among his 500 or so designs. Hardly any glossy magazine on the subject of interior design today manages without the elegant China chair (1943) or the Y chair (1950), and John F. Kennedy once sat on his round chair (1949), now simply called “The Chair”. The trained cabinet maker Wegner mostly created the prototypes with his own hand; he used traditional joining techniques such as slits and tenons or finger prongs, pushing the limits of what can be done with wood, giving his designs unparalleled elegance. Even humour did not fall by the wayside, as his magnificent peacock chair (1947) or the masculine ox chair (1960), which can be purchased with or without horns, prove.
