Collective Threads presents the outstanding artistic work of Anna Andreeva (1917–2008), a Russian textile designer and leading artist at the famous Red Rose Silk Factory in Moscow, which she headed from 1946 to 1984. Named after the Polish-German revolutionary Rosa Luxemburg, the factory was an outstanding centre of collective female design work that shaped the fashion and material culture of late socialism. Andreeva's impressive designs range from abstract and geometric – in the style of the early Soviet avant-garde – to motifs related to space travel, to cybernetics-inspired, magnificently stylised floral designs and elegant narrative depictions of Moscow, electrification, film, Russian folk art and Central Asian subjects. Her fabrics, designed for mass production, were among the most popular textile prints in the Soviet Union in the 1960s and 1970s.
