As an illustrator, the artist Benoît van Innis (1960–2024) created numerous drawings and caricatures that appeared in Europe and the United States, including in The New Yorker magazine. Beginning in the late 1990s, he focused increasingly on painting, explored architecture, and collaborated on various projects that bridged art and the built environment.

The English-language book Benoît: Artist in Architecture is the first to present, in detail, his collaborations with the architectural firms De Smet Vermeulen, EM2N, jo taillieu architecten / advvt, Kraaijvanger Architects, Marie-José Van Hee, Robbrecht en Daem, noAarchitecten, and Sergison Bates architects. It explores the collaboration between the artist and architects and traces the emergence of a shared, new form of authorship in the interplay between art and architecture.

Organized into four thematic chapters—Table, Space, Landscape, and City—Benoît’s spatial works are presented in depth, each introduced by a descriptive text based on the experience of the spaces themselves and the independent works associated with them. Additional essays shed light on Benoît’s working methods and the craftsmanship underlying these projects. An illustrated catalog of Benoît’s entire body of work in the field of art in architecture rounds out the volume.
