Martin Chambi
Of indigenous origin, Chambi dedicated much of his life to photographing the Peruvian Andes in the early 20th century. Eleven years after Hiram Bingham photographed the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu for an exclusive reportage for National Geographic, Martín Chambi captured it with his own lens. With the images of the Inca ruins and the portraits of life in the Andean communities, he tried to reclaim the pre-Hispanic past, making him a symbolic figure of contemporary documentary photography in Peru and Latin America.
