Architecture schools are currently being built all over the world. The main reasons for this are new space requirements and the pursuit of excellence in education. Despite the claim of many institutions to teach concepts for new, innovative architecture, schools are often bound by tight constraints and prescribed space programmes when building their own facilities. Under these conditions, how can free spaces for architectural education be created and forward-looking ideas as well as unconventional uses be promoted? more
The third Lucerne Symposium for Architectural Pedagogues 2019 of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts explored this question by making the real spaces in which architects are trained the subject of its investigation. The dialogues and essays collected in this volume discuss what future teaching institutes might look like and whether a school even needs to consist of buildings. The result is a multi-voiced intercultural exchange that collects contemporary and visionary ideas for schools of architecture in the age of global pandemics and digital teaching.
