The series “Visual Archives” is the result of research projects initiated and carried out by the ECAL/Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne. It examines the unexplored legacies of designers, authors and brands. Documents and visual material from archives are accompanied and contextualized by critical essays. The first volume of the series is devoted to the teaching activities of the Swiss graphic artist Hermann Eidenbenz (1902-1993). moreHermann Eidenbenz was one of the first to call himself a “graphic artist” in Switzerland. From the 1910s to the 1950s he was first a student and later a teacher of graphic art at the trade schools in Zurich, Magdeburg, Basel and Braunschweig. The didactic materials published here from Eidenbenz's time as a graphic arts teacher shed light on this creative discipline in a period shortly before graphic art gained international fame in Switzerland. With contributions by Roland Früh and François Rappo.
