Born in Gando, a small village in Burkina Faso, Francis Kéré's journey is one of a kind. As he left his hometown for a carpentry training programme in Germany he summarily decided to stay and apply for the renowned architecture and engineering course at Berlin's Technische Universität. Since then his individual and remarkable fingerprint can be seen throughout his architecture and shows ever since his understanding of its function and contribution to this world: architecture as a social act, applying to the needs, demands and possibilities of a certain landscape and its inhabitants.
