    From Ulm into the World

In his monograph From Ulm into the World, Christopher Haaf uses the HfG’s exhibitions to explore the dynamic tension between scepticism at the local level and the accolades that the school consistently received on the international stage. The exhibitions were at once a response to permanent pressure from the outside, ”resorting to going public“ as it were, and the product of the Ulm network, which extended all over the world. They not only allow us to delineate a comprehensive account of the HfG’s eventful history but also reveal how design developed into a global phenomenon in the post-war period.

Christopher Haaf studied history and art history at the LMU Munich. After a traineeship at the Bayerische Sammlungen und Museen and working as a freelance art historian, he now works at the Bayerisches Landesamt für Denkmalpflege.

    Wohltuende Sachlichkeit

Beginning with the exhibition craze of the 1950s, Linus Rapp’s monograph Wohltuende Sachlichkeit looks at the design work carried out at the HfG and the way this was reflected in theoretical considerations. In this sense, the book interprets exhibitions as the outcome of design processes bearing fruit in the public arena and as a starting point for the critical analysis of basic questions about systems and methods of staging and representation. Particular emphasis is placed here on the public res- ponses that these exhibitions elicited.
