With the publication of his photo essay Hikari to Kage (Light and Shadow) in the first issues of Shashin Jidai magazine, Daido Moriyama announced his return to photography after almost a decade. Moriyama had a creative slump from the age of thirty-five, ever since the publication of his seminal book, Shashin yo Sayonara (Farewell Photography) in 1972. Attracted by Akira Hasegawa, the editor of Shashin Jidai, Moriyama was invited to contribute photographs for each issue and this began a long relationship between the photographer and Shashin Jidai. Eventually he would produce a total of six serialised essays that appeared in sixty-three issues (in every issue but one) until its closure in April 1988. During this period Moriyama worked almost exclusively for Shasin Jidai and was given a free hand to explore and experiment with the medium. Tragically, more than eighty per cent of the negatives have been lost from this fundamental body of work. In this sensational volume, the complete set of essays and chapters are brought together for the first time, each complete essay reproduced along with a selected portfolio of images and essays written by Moriyama as they appeared in the original magazines. The text appears in Japanese with English translation. In over 400 pages, it provides access to a crucial period in the evolution of one of the most revered and influential photographers of the 20th century, as yet undocumented in book form.
