Interview with Zak Kyes (Zak Group)

Interview with Zak Kyes (Zak Group)

Virgil Abloh. Nike. ICONS
Coming soon from Taschen, ICONS showcases the historical collaboration between two iconic forces: (fashion) designer Virgil Abloh and Nike Inc.  Two big players who came together to reinvent ten iconic sneaker designs, from the Air Jordan 1 to Air Presto. ‚A minimum of two‘ seemed to be the magic formula when London-based Zak Group came on board to translate the sneaker-recontextualising, meta-cultural design project into book form. Since both Abloh and Zak Group are well-known for their trans-disciplinary, process-oriented work, they made the perfect match: not simply sneaker-heads, but perfectly positioned to transform consumer objects into cultural artifacts. We had a little chat with Zak Kyes about the making of the much-hyped, impossibly green volume. Pre-Order here! More

Interview with Tibor Bielicky – Superposition

In need of any ideas while staying at home this winter? Why not read this exceptional – and loooong – interview about five friends who used their spring lock-down time rather wisely for the last refinements of their magazine. The very first issue of Superposition is about nothing else than the 'Hardcore Home'. This wild hodgepodge of absurd and compelling home narratives with an architectural touch – and a beautiful layout - will take you into the hidden, obscure notions of your beloved Home sweet Home!

Interview with Frank Rocholl and Henrik Purienne

Interview with Frank Rocholl and Henrik Purienne

Please note: You are about to enter the cosmos of Mirage. A sensual exploration of a feeling, maybe an attitude, embedded in paper and created by the German Graphic Designer and Art Director Frank Rocholl who happened to stand in front of the Kloofhill house, Cape Town. Its owner, South African Filmmaker and Photographer Henrik Purienne, remembers: „Eye for detail for sure. Casual chat. Common interests.“ That was that. What followed were four issues of Mirage (2009-2014), JamaisVu. Mirage Anthology. (2016), a side project by Purienne Jeux de Peaux (2019) all filled with vast horizons, deep blue seawater, endless Summer pool-side days, beautiful women, fast vintage cars, timeless design classics…Sounds too cliche? Well, we agree. But though, Mirage is filled with outwardly alluring phenomena it does prove that beautiful and glossy doesn't equal superficiality. Buy More
Interview with artist Sigrid Calon

Interview with artist Sigrid Calon

Bright, geometrical shapes floating within embroidery grids; while – layer upon layer – hypnotising patterns evolve. Patterns which are always both: utmost abstraction and surprisingly concrete. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tilburg and some years of working within the fashion industry, Dutch visual artist Sigrid Calon turned her back on the daily life of custom sized work, deadlines and compromises in 2005. As an autonomous artist she finally found the time to entirely follow her curious mind, experimenting with materials and printing techniques while exploring the DNA of her own visual language. A milestone of this journey was her fateful encounter with the Risograph. Legend has it that from the very first moment, she couldn't get her hands off this machine. Now, her colourful and electrifying Riso press artwork can be marvelled at in her latest Riso print publication SC_1/1_1/2_1/4_1/8More
Interview with Miruna Sorescu - Sindroms

Interview with Miruna Sorescu – Sindroms

In a world in which facts are handled as a matter of interpretation, it’s kind of ironic, that Sindroms, a magazine dedicated to colours proves that our highly subjective, emotional response to light refraction is by far less arbitrarily than one might think. In fact, our associative apparatus triggered by different qualities and intensities of the colour palette evokes a multitude of versatile and contrasting ‚monochrome states of minds‘. Without lapsing into banality, Sindroms unveils, issue after issue, all the complex and not seldom hidden layers of colours. So far it has been red, yellow, white before the pink issue hit our shelves. We e-met founder and Creative Director of Sindroms, Miruna Sorescu, to talk about her "obsessive-compulsive tendency of colour coding“ and how to translate this passion into print. More
Flaneur Taipei Q&A

Interview with Fabian Saul – Flaneur

Part II
While the halls of the HKW were illuminated by stroboscopic neon-lights, a large number of people hit the road to come, join and enjoy all the performances, discussions and intercultural encounters which arose from the fruitful collaborations between Flaneur and their invited Taiwanese artists. It comes at no surprise: the very first Flaneur Festival turned out to be a total blast! After more than one year stitching on Flaneur's Taipei issue - and, aligning a whole Festival on top of it - one can say right of the bat, that the hard work paid off well. Time to draw a first conclusion with Flaneur's editor in chief, Fabian Saul. More
Flaneur Taipei Q&A

Interview with Grashina Gabelmann – Flaneur

Part I
After winning the Lead Awards for Best Indie Publisher, a D&AD Award for Best Magazine Design, a couple of Stack Awards which all end with the phrase ‘of the year’ – just to name a few – the trio behind Flaneur is getting regularly invited to join various workshops and panel discussions all around the world. So one might ask: ‘What's next? What else do you want to achieve, dear Flaneur-Team?!’ Which is, frankly, not the most unreasonable question to have in mind but also becomes self-evident considering the up-coming Flaneur Festival at the HKW in Berlin. We met Grashina Gabelmann, one of Flaneur's editors in chief and got carried away by her sparkling imagination when it comes to stretch the idea of publishing a magazine to its very limits. More
Interview with Kai von Rabenau - mono.kultur

Interview with Kai von Rabenau – mono.kultur

The small independent fan-zine (DIN A5) from Berlin, with an even smaller lettering (8.5 pt), has been delighting its loyal readers for over 13 years. While some conduct an interview, mono.kultur takes the art of dialogue to the extreme with its extended question-answer game. The idea behind is simple: one issue, one artist, one interview. Right on time for the latest issue with fashion designer Iris van Herpen we met Kai von Rabenau, the driving force behind mono.kultur, to talk about the subtle art of an interview. In order to not be embarrassed in front of the master of vis-à-vis, we asked our questions à la carte. So from now on the rule is: one card, one question - following the motto ‘Play it as it lays’.

More
Interview with Indhira Rojas - Anxy Magazine

Interview with Indhira Rojas – Anxy Magazine

We have been spoilt for choice when it came to choose our next interview partner among all these brave, quirky, loud, shy, straight women out there. ‘Big time whining’ indeed! We are all the more pleased that we’ve got founder and creative director of Anxy Magazine, Indhira Rojas, for our second Q&A. In fact, for us it’s like a catch 22 - only in a far more positive manner. With a little help from Indhira we managed to find a way to address both sides of the story: what it means to be a woman and a man these days and far more important, how these notions of gender categories affect and conflict our inner worlds. Interview with Vala Thorodds - Pain Magazine

Interview with Vala Thorodds – Pain Magazine

The easiest way to get right to the bottom of things is - naturally - playing ‚Truth and Dare‘. So let’s start with bare facts. You think poetry is rather dusty, quixotic or charming as moulded grey bread? No worries, you don’t have to say your answer out loud. Frankly, we (almost) all have been there. But we have to break it to you: The natural evolution of the lyrical section on our shelves almost clandestinely multiplied itself over the last few years. And this is not the only thing to say about this art form currently experiencing a fulminant renaissance. The revival of poems comes along fresh, colorful, innovative and - definitely worth to mention - the fellows who are falling for lyrical rhythms, getting lost in-between the lines are as vivid and young as their thrilled audience. And still, as Poetry Magazine (launched in 1912!) names the elephant in the room already within its title: Who reads poetry? We thought it would be a smart move to choose ‚Dare‘ and asked one of the most dazzling voices of this new poetry wave and the co-editor of Pain Magazine: Vala Thorodds. More
