Social Design Book

When Antti Tuomola wanted to open a restaurant in Helsinki back in 2011, he found himself caught up in bureaucracy that did not leave any space for innovation. So he gathered some friends to find a solution to enrich Helsinki's culinary scene without the troubles to open a permanent restaurant and may it be just for one day. As a result 40 people turned their private homes into temporary restaurants for "Restaurant Day", inviting strangers into their kitchen. By 2016 "Restaurant Day" turned into a worldwide cultural event.⁠ But this book is not about "Restaurant Day". Kim Jong Il

Like any model dictator also notorious Kim Jong Il sought to orchestrate his own figure in the media. But since he did not really seem to like words or maybe the sound of his own voice, who knows, he was less than rarely seen giving speeches. Instead he staged himself as the observer of his county. If you now think that this means him looking at great scientific achievements or military gear, you are far from it. Not that he did not also do that but he seemed to "go and visit" everything that there is to see in his country.⁠ A feared dictator with a hardly changing facial expression, wearing blindingly dark sunglasses, and followed by an entourage of bodyguards and officers while he is looking at random things is unwillingly comical, in combination with caption such as "Kim Jong Il looking at a radish", "Kim Jong Il looking at a dvd labeling machine", "Kim Jong Il looking at women bras" it makes us laugh with tears. San Rocco

‚This is not a call for papers!‘ Saying goodbye by dedicating its (literal) latest issue to the meaning of death in architecture and beyond can hardly be done more gracefully. Alas, after almost one decade working in print business and 15 released issues, San Rocco’s brilliant architectural endeavor comes to an end. We are not only going to miss its elegant, monochromatic cover design on our shelves but also its crisscrossing, interdisciplinary approach to lampoon architectural matters in - an ever delighting intellectual way! Interview mit Fabian Ebeling – Die Epilog

Egal ob über Protest, die Wiederverzauberung der Welt, ein Leben im Konjunktiv oder die Bedeutung von Irrelevanz, die Epilog hat sich durch und durch dem letzten Wort verschrieben. Mit 'Wird schon schiefgehen. Große Pläne' geht sie in eine neue Runde. Zeit also, ein paar Fragen an die Macher hinter dem Gesellschaftsmagazin für Gegenwartskultur zu stellen. Eure neueste Ausgabe trägt den Titel „Wird schon schiefgehen. Große Pläne“. Wirft man aber einen Blick auf die gegenwärtige politische und gesellschaftliche Lage, hat man eher den Eindruck, dass hier niemand wirklich viel Plan von irgendetwas hat. Kann denn überhaupt noch die Rede sein von großen Plänen in einer immer komplexer werdenden Zeit? Ich glaube, wir reden uns auch ganz schön ein, dass alles komplexer wird. Vielleicht sollten wir uns da mal locker machen. Trotzdem finden gerade Veränderungen statt, von denen wir noch nicht absehen können, was sie morgen bringen werden. Offensichtlich gelingt es Ländern wie China ganz gut, große Pläne wie die neue Seidenstraße umzusetzen. Ob die Art und Weise und das politische System dort den demokratischen Gesellschaften nun gefällt oder gefallen muss, sei dahingestellt. Davon abgesehen ist die Frage nach großen Plänen auch immer die Frage der Skalierung: Wann ist ein Plan wirklich groß?...

bauhaus imaginista

This year the infamous German school Bauhaus turns 100. From 1919 till 1933 it was home of the avant-garde of modernism until the institution was finally forced to close through reprisals by Hitler's regime. With its manifestos, revolutionary ideas and iconic designs it is still the often quoted authority for German design and modernism worldwide. But instead of republishing again the same iconographic objects that repeatedly pop up as soon as someone says "Bauhaus", the exhibition catalogue bauhaus imaginista approaches contemporary problems through the ideal and material legacies of the Bauhaus. International Women Day 2019

...as we all know this year's International Women Day is on its way. So we thought why not talk about sex, gender, and equality for a start. Luckily, the times feminism is associated with edgy, cold-blooded, joyless women who wear their hair on their teeth, as we say in German, are definitely over. On the contrary the F* word seems to be the hottest shit these days. Many are inspired and encouraged by brave folks who lead the way, telling how they experience equality (or not) at work, out on the streets, and at home. Coming along Joan Didion’s line “We tell our stories in order to life”, we take the American essayist by her word and give space to the manifold voices and their individual stories, compiling all our inspiring titles on feminism, gender, and equality. As feminism is as diverse, complicated, beautiful as women and girls are, it would be wrong to not talk about masculinity, lgbtq and gender at the same time as this cultural paradigm shift happening right now affects us all. So we are delighted that founder and creative director of Anxy Magazine, Indhira Rojas, found some time to talk with us about Anxy’s latest issue Masculinity for our second Q&A coming this week! Interview with Vala Thorodds – Pain Magazine

The easiest way to get right to the bottom of things is - naturally - playing ‚Truth and Dare‘. So let’s start with bare facts. You think poetry is rather dusty, quixotic or charming as moulded grey bread? No worries, you don’t have to say your answer out loud. Frankly, we (almost) all have been there. But we have to break it to you: The natural evolution of the lyrical section on our shelves almost clandestinely multiplied itself over the last few years. And this is not the only thing to say about this art form currently experiencing a fulminant renaissance. The revival of poems comes along fresh, colorful, innovative and - definitely worth to mention - the fellows who are falling for lyrical rhythms, getting lost in-between the lines are as vivid and young as their thrilled audience. And still, as Poetry Magazine (launched in 1912!) names the elephant in the room already within its title: Who reads poetry? We thought it would be a smart move to choose ‚Dare‘ and asked one of the most dazzling voices of this new poetry wave and the co-editor of Pain Magazine: Vala Thorodds.

The Earth dies streaming

When one of the last of his kind, the film critic and cinephile A.S. Hamrah ponders about the contemporary condition of his profession it’s both, touching and frightening. Hamrah surprises in The Earth dies Streaming with his sublime foresight. By describing the historical transformation of film criticism from his personal experience, readers cannot help but nod their heads over and over again. In times in which criticism is no longer directed against the mass media, but in which the masses diligently criticise - better: comment - through every available media channel, Hamrah sees the art of film criticism doomed to failure. And yet, what remains is a slightly shameful feeling of witnessing a last rebellion of a living fossil that turns its last lap of honour. Rightly so! Because what follows is a collection of film reviews he wrote for n+1 between 2002 and 2018.
