What makes one think that while the world is going digital, opening a printed magazines and books store, is a very good idea? Well we thought it was indeed and Berlin was just the right place for it. This year we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of do you read me?! – looks like it wasn’t the worst idea we ever had.
Located in a quiet corner on Auguststrasse in Berlin’s Mitte district, the store is a perfect readers escapade and quite often quite busy with people browsing the international assortment. The core stock of do you read me?!’s selection covers titles on architecture, art and design, in tandem with a large collection on fashion, literature, music, film, typography, photography, food, sports, and even some titles for children. The idea is to provide an inspiring overview of today’s printed matter, both independent and popular, copy-shopped and glossy, strange and familiar.
In addition to the front-desk activities we hosted lectures, book-signings and exhibitions to bring artists, authors, publishers and everyone interested in contemporary culture in the same space. Through satellite stores we have also been a regular guest in a number of international fairs such as Design Miami/ Basel, Art Berlin Contemporary, Miss Read, Biennale Interieur in Kortrijk or Salone del Mobile in Milan.
Over the years, do you read me?! evolved into a local culturaly niche and we were able to establish a worldwide reputation with our trademark label and products appearing in many countries like Korea, Russia, Japan, Israel and Cuba. Our simple black and white tote bag and the 365 calendrical notebooks are particular favourites to many of our customers – beside of the assortment of Magazines and Books, of course.
With our store being widely noticed and locally appreciated, we were finally able to launch our online shop this autumn – thankfully and finally after 10 years of oldschool e-mail-order. This will give you, enthusiasts from all over the world the chance to see what’s new on our shelves and make it a lot easier to order your favourite magazines, books and goods. But it never will of course never be a surrogate for an in store browsing experience ; )
We hope you enjoy it and please drop by to say hello when in town!
